TOPIC : SCIENCE LIBRARY

A library is the storehouse of knowledge, the flowing stream of living thoughts and an educational apparatus of considerable value. It is one of the most useful, stimulating and potent instrument of dynamic developmental education in the school. The school library is now regarded as a live place humming with activity. It is place where pupils go not only for study but for enjoyment too. Work and play go side by side in a typical progressive school library.

From the beginning of children need an environment enriched by attractive books and it is one of the duties of the school to see that this environment is provided. If a child’s early experiences with books are pleasurable a sound foundation is laid for their use in his future development because once the child has been taught love and read books with a passion they become the main source for exploration of knowledge.

One of the important recommendations made by the secondary school education commission was that every school has subject libraries which are under the charge of subject teachers. It was felt that the subject teacher could enrich their teaching making use of small collections of books on their own subjects. Science being of the most important areas of school curriculam the content of which rapidly goes on chainging both teachers and pupils have to constantly go on reading books in the subject. First of all let the teachers find out the latest books and update their knowledge. Then they can recommend some books to their students and encourage then to acquire the habit of extending and supplementing their knowledge by making proper use of library. Science library thus can be a wonderful teaching aid for realising the demands of developmental education.

The main objectives of organizing a science library

v To help teachers and pupil alike update scientific knowledge

v To facilitate self studies and learning to learn

v To enrich curricular experiences

v To enable pupils participate in discussion and project works meaningfully

v To make co- curricular activities such as participation in science club activities more meaningful and dynamic

v To create interest in science as a subject of study

v To develop the habit of concentrated reading of knowledgable books with a purpose

v To develop the students critical attitude and capacity for independent judgement

v To develop the habit of reading as a useful leisure time activity

Important library resources for science

Book resource

A variety of books are essential for presenting different pointsof view and for providing adequate experiences for the learning of concepts, principles and processes. In book resources we can include

a)Text Books: The library should have a variety of most uptodate textbooks in different sections of science

b) Library materials: Inspirational and imaginative literature particularly tales of adventure, should appear prominently along side books of information on children’s hobbies which may be anything from Easy biographies, historical series, animal stories etc. Travel stories can also be included.

c) Reference materials: The library should be fairly well equipped with reference materials conventional and non-conventional. Conventional reference books include dictionaries, encyclopedias, year books, atlas , maps, charts, handbooks etc. The non-conventional reference material consist of all other library books that may be employed for reference service of any other kind.

In library the non book resources are also included like periodicals, pamphlets, news papers etc.

Utilization of science library resources

It is necessary that pupils are taught the techniques of locating relevant reference and resource material in the library within the least time possible. Assignment should be given in the form of problems . This would compel the pupil to investigate and examine multiple resources.

The science library today is concerned to be the intellectual laboaratory of the school. It is being rightly felt today that textbooks are no longer “Educational Bibles” to be used as the sole authority helping cognitive development. They need to be supported , supplemented and reinforced by other sources of information. If science to be a living and vital discipline the science library must be accepted as an integral part of science education in its totality.
